The Easy Way to Make a Yarn Pompom with a Pompom Maker

Creating a pompom is a fun and easy way to add a touch of whimsy to your crafts. Whether you're embellishing a hat, scarf, or even a keychain, mastering the art of making a pompom is a valuable skill to have in your crafting repertoire.

A pompom maker is a handy tool for creating pompoms easily and efficiently. Here's a general guide on how to use one:

  1. Open the pompom maker: The pompom maker usually consists of two hinged semicircular arms that you can open up. Open the arms fully to reveal the inner mechanism.

  2. Wrap yarn around one arm: Start by holding one arm of the pompom maker and begin wrapping your yarn around it starting on one side and moving along to the other with a thin layer of wrapped yarn.  When you get to the other side, wrap another layer of yarn as you go back. The more yarn you wrap, the fuller your pompom will be.

  3. As a general rule, you want the yarn to be full enough to be level with the ends of the semicircle. However, you don't want to over wrap past the ends.  Also, only wrap the yarn around the semicircle and don't get it tangled in with the ends of the semicircle. Cut the yarn and tuck it under the last loop of yarn so it doesn't unravel.  It doesn't need to be knotted.

  1. Wrap the other arm: Repeat the wrapping process on the second arm of the pompom maker.

  1. Close the pompom maker: After wrapping yarn around both arms, close the pompom maker so that the two arms are aligned again and make a circle.

  2. Trim the excess yarn: While keeping the arms closed, use a pair of sharp scissors, and carefully cut along the center ridge of the pompom maker.   This will cut the yarn loops and release the pompom.

  3. Tie a piece of yarn around the center: Take a separate piece of yarn and tie it tightly around the center of the pompom maker, between the two halves. This will secure the pompom and prevent it from falling apart.

  4. Release the pompom: Open the arms of the pompom maker to reveal your completed pompom. Gently pull it out, being careful not to unravel or damage it.

  5. Trim and shape the pompom: Once the pompom is removed from the maker, you may need to trim any uneven strands to achieve a more uniform shape. Shape the pompom by fluffing it up and trimming any stray fibers until you're satisfied with its appearance.

  6. Attach the pompom: You can attach the pompom to various items like hats, scarves, bags, or crafts using the long tie you used to secure the center.

Can you make a pompom without a pompom maker?

If you don't have a pompom maker, you can easily make one using cardboard. Cut two identical cardboard circles and make a small hole in the center of each. Place the circles together and start wrapping yarn around them. Once the cardboard is full, carefully cut along the edges and tie a piece of yarn around the center to secure the pompom.
